Gabriel DeHoyos is a native
of Houston, TX. He began his
guitar studies at the age of
fourteen with jazz virtuoso
Mike Wheeler. In 1998 he
won a prestigious Down Beat
award. His passion for music
lead him to study guitar at the
University of Houston’s
Moores School of Music. In
2001, at the suggestion of his
teacher Mike Wheeler,
Gabriel transferred to the
University of North Texas.
Here he was free to focus on
classical guitar repertoire
and majored in Guitar
Performance under Thomas
Johnson. Gabriel studied
several years privately with
Mitchell Weverka, here
Gabriel developed his
pedagogical
approach.Through merit
Gabriel was awarded the
opportunity to perform in
master classes for such
international artist as Matteo
Mela, Dimitri Illarionov, and
Lorenzo Micheli.
Currently, Gabriel lives in
Dallas Texas and is a dual
masters candidate in
Classical Guitar Performance
and Music Education at the
Southern Methodist
University. SMU has
awarded him various
academic and performance
scholarships. Currently
Gabriel is graduate teaching
assistant at SMU and studies
with master musician and
pedagogue Robert Guthrie.
